Electrocatalysis of Selective Chlorine Evolution Reaction: Fundamental Understanding and Catalyst Design

<p>The electrochemical chlorine evolution reaction (CER) is an important and has been widely used in chlor–alkali electrolysis, on-site generation of ClO<sup>−</sup>, Cl<sub>2</sub>-mediated electrosynthesis. Although precious metal-based mixed metal oxides (MMOs) have as CER catalysts for more than half a century, they intrinsically suffer from selectivity problem between the parasitic oxygen (OER). Hence, design selective electrocatalysts critically important. In this review, we provide overview fundamental issues related to electrocatalysis strategies electrocatalysts. We present experimental theoretical methods assessing active sites MMO origin scaling relationship OER. discuss kinetic analysis understand kinetics mechanisms CER. Next, summarize new that can enhance reactivity MMO-based overcome their relationship, which include doping with foreign metals development non-precious atomically dispersed catalysts.</p>
